Understanding Autism

Children who otherwise might be normal at birth, begin showing signs that are bizzare by the second year. Autism is diagnosed with observable behavior that varies from time to time and from child to child. That's why it's called Autism Spectrum Disorders. Typically, Autism affected child gets busy in his own world. Self talking, self playing, self stimulating activities, irrelevant laughing and crying. The child may be intolerant to sound, touch, or non-responsive to sound, smell, taste. Speech may be absent or may develop that is not appropriate. Intelligence may be normal, below normal or have exceptional talent in limited areas, called Savant syndrome.

Behavioral Traits of an ASD affected child.
  • Not react to their name (the child may appear deaf)

  • Not point at objects or things of interest, or demonstrate an interest

  • Avoid eye contact

  • Want to be alone

  • Have difficulty understanding, or showing understanding, or other people’s feelings or their own

  • Have no speech or delayed speech

  • Repeat words or phrases over and over (echolalia)

  • Get disappointed by minor changes

About Autism

What is Autism?

More than 2% of newborn are likely to regress with features that increasingly appear to be Autism. Autism can make it difficult for the child to have normal communication skills and social skills. The child shows peculiar repetitive behavior. It's  not easy for the child to join mainstream schools. The disorder, if not treated early could cause lifetime disability in the affected children. The cause of Autism

is yet not known. Hence prevention of the disorder is not yet possible. However, the children can overcome the problems developed as part of Autism if early intervention with intensive therapeutic care is provided. Normal or near normal functional skills can develop paving the way for integration in mainstream schools and help them to lead normal life.
